First Warrior Golf Outing a Success

How can it get any better? Good people, gorgeous weather, beautiful Pocono scenery, and playing golf. The first golf outing was a terrific afternoon and ended with a buffet and prizes awarded. Tim Brown Sr. was the catalyst for this event, and did a great job organizing the day. Steve Nowicki and Steve Palmer also were invaluable in making this a success. After the buffet awards were made: Longest Drive – John Shelton; Closest to the pin – John Shelton; Straightest Drive – Steve Nowicki; Lowest Foursome Score (-6) – Steve Nowicki, Brian Nowicki, Drew Nowicki, and John Shelton; “Happiest Foursome” – The Nowicki Foursome. As we left it was suggested that next year we rename the outing as the “Nowicki Classic”. Thanks to all that participated in the outing. Until next year hit’em straight and may all your balls be in the fairway.

Warrior Alumni Game a lot of goals; a lot of memories

The annual alumni game was played on April 17th at Leigh Valley Ice Rink. It was a great afternoon for the 42 former and present players. The alums got on the scoreboard first on his knees, to the ’07-’08 captain John Enright who put the rubber in the net. John was so tired from his minute on the ice that he attempted to swim back to the bench. Alumni 1 ESU 0. The game was tied on a goal by Matt Denega on a wrister when he walked in on goal. Alumni 1- ESU 1. The alumni scored to take back the lead when Pete Lyden , on a pass from Sean Brennan, put the biscuit in the basket. Alumni 2 – ESU 1. The highlight of the game came early when Joe Riches Sr. stopped Dan Galgano on a penalty shot. Dan shot high on the stick side but Riches Sr. deflected it to the glass. The confidence was shaken by this great play, but ESU players answered just before the end of the period on a 3 on 2 when Bob McMillan sent a pass into the slot to the speedy Joe Deery who wristed the puck into the net. The score was tied starting the 2nd period. A minute in, Dean “the hammer” Malanga, scored on a penalty shot. Alumni 2 – ESU 3. The score became 4 to 2 twelve minutes later when Stephen Palmer, on a pass from James Terrill, buried a wrist shot. Shortly after, Deery won a face-off to McMillan who walked into the slot and ripped and ripped the puck into the twine. Aluni 2 – ESU 5. The alums scored to make it Alumni 3 – ESU 5 when Brian Webber dazzled the fans with a rush from the neutral zone, deked the “D” and fired the puck into the net. The ESU squad responded immediately on a pass from Matt Cook to John Shelton flying through the slot and John sent the puck home. Alumni 3 – ESU 6. Tim Brennan sent a headman pass to Chris deIturrondo who, literally, carried the puck and Brian Nowicki into the net. Alumni 3 – ESU 7. The 3rd period started with Anthony Astarita elbowing Brian Duggan’s head before the face-off which unnoticed or ignored by the official. Ten minutes later, on a pass from Duggan, Denega deposited the biscuit in the mesh. Alumni 3 – ESU 8. The final alum goal was scored on a Lyden pass to the flying Matt Gummel who deflected the pass into the goal. Alumni 4 – ESU 8. The scoring was closed out on a Palmer to Brown to Palmer give and go and Palmer stashed the disc in the goal. Final score Alumni 4 – ESU 9. The goalies were all outstanding in an offense emphasized game. Travis LeBar for ESU. Brian Nowicki and Joe Riches Sr. for the alumni. The ESU team was led by the coach, Steve Nowicki, whose magnificent line match ups and inspiring between period speeches left the alumns with little chance of success.
