The season is over and it ended in sudden death. When you look back the Warriors lost a number of games in the last minute of a game. One with 10 seconds left, but this hurt the most because so much was riding on the win. Last season ESU hit its stride in the playoffs and went to the championship game. Really felt like we were going to repeat that feat. But it was not to be.
Alvernia University scored the first goal of the game with seven minutes remaining in the 2nd period on a 4 on 4 situation. On an outlet pass along the right boards the Alvernia forward made a perfect pass to a teammate crashing the net who deflected the pass into the net. ESU 0 AU 1.
With just 27 seconds left in the period, the Warriors tied the score. Brian Duggan won the face off and Nick “the Quick” Londino picked up the puck, took a stride and ripped a twisted wrister and buried the biscuit in the basket. ESU 1 Alvernia 1. End of two and tied at one.
With a little over 7 minutes left in the 3rd period, and on a power play, Dean “the Hammer” Malanga scored an unassisted goal with the aid of a Ryan Malandra screen. On an attempted clearing pass, Dean stopped the puck inside the blue line and fired a slap shot past the screened goalie. ESU 2 AU 1. Alvernia tied the score four minutes later when a puck, being thrown out from behind the net hit the skate of a Warrior defenseman and into the goal. ESU 2 AU 2. Regulation time ended with the teams tied.
Thirteen seconds into OT a penalty was called on ESU. Alvernia took advantage of the power play and scored on a snap shot that was deflected at the crease into the net. Final score ESU 2 AU 3. We played well enough to win and out shot our opponent 52 – 21 as they visited the sin bin often. It was a hard way to end a very exciting and action filled season. See everyone at Stony Acres!
In a DVCHC qualifying game last Saturday vs. PSU Berks, the Warriors , to their credit, tried not to pile it on the out classed opponent. The scoreboard read 11-1 and shots 95- 6, actually, that was the situation when they stopped updating the scoreboard. Travis LeBar deserves credit for not nodding off in the middle of the game. In the interest of time and space on the web site, this report will include goal scorers and assists without description. Notable: Brian Duggan and Chris deIturrondo had hat tricks. Matt Denega 2 goals and 3 assists, Ryan Malandra 2 goals and 2 assists, Nick Londino 5 assists, and Tim Brown 4 assists. Sorry. Tried to do below info as a list. Couldn’t. Would have been easier to read.

The way the game started the thought was to stop video taping the game and go enjoy a hot chocolate. Reason being Rider scored twice in the first 2 minutes of the game. But I should have known better, because the team has not quit in a game all season. Rider would not score again until there was less than 9 minutes left in the 2nd period. The first Rider goal came when a rider player was able to walk in from the boards and tee up a snap shot. ESU 0 – Rider 1. The second goal was scored after Warrior goalie, Travis LeBar, had stopped 2 point blank shots, but the last rebound was flipped into the net. ESU 0 – Rider 2.
Warriors Play Well in Loss to RiderFour and half minutes into the 2nd period ESU closed the gap to a one goal deficit. Ryan Malandra carried the puck across the low slot and let go a backhand shot. Ryan got his own rebound and got it to Nick Londino on the side of the net. Nick, quickly, sent a pass to Stephen Palmer in front of the crease, and Palmer buried a backhander. ESU 1 – Rider 2. Rider took back a 2 goal lead on a power play goal. The goal was scored on a rocket of a slap shot from inside the point. ESU 1 – Rider 3. Fourteen seconds later the Warriors got the goal back. Nick, The Quick, Londino intercepted a cross ice pass, in the ESU zone, and went in one on one, deked the goalie and lifted a wrister over the goalie’s blocker. ESU 2 – Rider 3.
The 3rd period was well played and eight and a half minutes in ESU tied the score when Chris Tull cleared the puck to Londino in the neutral zone. Londino quickly delivered a pass to Dean, The Hammer, Malanga at the Rider blue line. Malanga skated in and from between the circles hammered the puck into the top left corner. ESU 3 – Rider 3. Rider scored the winning goal in a 4 on 4 situation off a face-off when a rebound off a shot went right to a Rider player who slid the puck into goal. The final goal came when the puck was thrown across the crease and went in off a Warrior defender.Final score – ESU 3 – Rider 5. An excellent game after a disastrous beginning.
